How to Make a Miniskirt

Skirts are a staple in every woman's wardrobe. You can make your own miniskirt rather than pay a lot of money in a department store. If you have basic sewing skills, this project doesn't take long to complete. And you can add a touch of your personality to the miniskirt you make.

Things You'll Need:

Measuring tape

Fabric

Drawstring cord

Straight pins

Scissors

Thread

Sewing machine

Ironing board

Steam iron

Safety pin

Fray check

Step
1

Measure your hips. Add two or three inches. This is the width of the miniskirt fabric. Decide how long you want your miniskirt to be. Add 1ВЅ inch for the top casing and 2ВЅ inches for the hem. You now have the measurement of the piece of fabric you need for the miniskirt.

Step
2

Choose your fabric. Purchase your other notions as well. Pre-wash the fabric on the regular wash cycle and dry it in the dryer.

Step
3

Cut the length of fabric to the dimensions in Step 1 and 2. Pin the narrow edges right sides together. Stitch a 5/8 inch seam with the sewing machine. At this point, your miniskirt is a tube that should have plenty of room for your hips.

Step
4

Turn down Вј inch on the wrong side for both the top and bottom edge of the miniskirt. Press it in place.

Step
5

Fold the top edge down one inch. Press the edge into place. Stitch close to the edge of the fabric all the way around.

Step
6

Make a tiny vertical snip in the outside center front of the casing. Put a safety pin in one end of the cording. Run the cording through the casing using the safety pin as the guide.

Step
7

Tie a knot in both ends of the cording. Put a drop of Fray Check on the slit to reinforce the slit. You can also put a drop on the each end of the cording.

Step
8

Try on the miniskirt. Have a friend help you measure the hem to get it straight. Pin the hem in place. Press it. Sew with the machine or by hand.
