How to Make a Jean Purse

Old jeans can be used for many craft projects and one of the most useful things that you can make is a jean purse. Take it to school or work and people will compliment your new purse and wonder where you bought it. They may be amazed to find out that you made it yourself or you could just keep the designer’s name a secret. You could even make a jean purse to give to a friend as a gift, if you would like. When you make a jean purse, follow the suggested steps below:

Things You'll Need:

Old pair of jeans

Needle and thread

Scissors

Step
1

Find an old pair of jeans and lay them out on a flat surface. While holding the waistband together evenly, smooth the rear area so that you will be able to cut just above the crotch seam. After you have cut straight across the jeans, turn them inside out and pin the bottom together with straight pins.

Step
2

Stitch the bottom together. Use a simple running stitch or backstitch to sew the bottom of the jean purse together. You can enforce and make the seam stronger by going back over the stitch that you just finished. Turn the purse back to the right side again.

Step
3

Measure for the flap. Use a tape measure or ruler to measure the width of the top of your jean purse. Rip the seams of one of the legs of the jeans and lay flat. Iron out any creases in the material and mark the top with the ruler to the same measurement that you had just took. Fold the material under about an inch on each side, pin and sew the length of the jean material.

Step
4

Pin the flap to the top of the jean purse. Sew this piece onto the back of the waistline making a flap for your purse. Lay that flap over the front of the purse and decide where you want it to rest. Cut excess material and make a hem at the bottom of the flap.

Step
5

Make the handle for your new jean purse. You will need to use the other pant leg and either make a straight strap or a braided one. For the braided version, cut the material into three strips equally and then braid together. With the straight handle, simply cut the length of jean material that you want, turn it inside out and sew it together. Stitch the handle onto each side of your new jean purse and you will be done.

Tips & Warnings

You can add your own style to your jean purse by adding rhinestones, sequins and other embelishments.
